Dear Den, Is it more important to strength train or cardio train?

Obviously, it all boils down to what you want to get out of your training. Different people are looking for a different shape of body and different overall results.

Strength training is important to build and maintain a good muscle mass and bone density in the body. This will help to keep a good metabolism and also to prevent many of the deficiencies that come in later years. Strength training is also a good way to keep your body from getting injuries by strengthening not only the muscles that hold your body up but also the joints and tendons as well.

Cardio is also important for cardiovascular and digestive health. Cardio burns more calories than strength training does but if taken too far, cardio can start to deplete the body of muscle mass. Just like about everything else in life, there has to be a balance. It is important that you do both, but which one you focus on is entirely dependant upon your goals.

Most men would choose to focus on strength training because it builds muscle, whereas most women would choose to focus on cardio because it makes a lean, thinner body shape. That doesn't mean you can't break the rules! Work out what goals you want to achieve first and this will drive the appropriate workout type. Just make sure to get in a little of both and don't overtrain on either.
