There are so many diets out there. Which is right for me?

Yes, there are many diets out there, but many are just fads. These types of diets are usually concocted by someone looking to make money off people looking to lose weight.

Unless you have specific allergies or health problems, I suggest you stick with what has always worked; a low fat, balanced, natural diet, with plenty of fruits and vegetables, and lots of pure water. There have been some new scientific findings about the new health benefits of some foods, such as walnuts being a good source of omega-3’s and spinach being a better salad than iceberg lettuce. It is good to keep up on all of that, but for the most part, eat what your mother always made you eat, but with more variety. There is a vast array of good healthy foods to satiate your palate and it is good to try them all. That way you get a good variety of vitamins and nutrients, too! You will find that a balanced diet, without restrictions, will help you stick with your diet because your body is getting everything it needs (no wild crazy binges of chocolate bonbons).

It is important to keep a food journal, at least at first. This will help you to see what your weaknesses are, how you can plan ahead to avoid pitfalls, and keep track of calorie and fat consumption. Studies also show that writing down what you eat makes you feel more accountable to your diet. After a while, it will be second nature to eat healthy and you will no longer need your food journal.
